Seeing progress on the agricultural front

by Shabbir Bhimani on June 21, 2008

Agriculture is considered to be the backbone of Indian economy. About 75 per cent of India’s population depends on agriculture. But India’s economic growth is not up to the mark. The main reason for this situation is that its agricultural growth is lagging behind. There is an urgent need for improvement in the agro- industries. Mostly, the major part of the land is in the hands of small and marginal farmers, who cannot afford costly inputs like fertilizers, better seeds, tractors and machineries for agricultural. Thus they depend on credit. Also, the farmers do not get enough returns for their products because they do not know agricultural marketing.

Some of the measures that we can take to improve the present agriculture situation are as follows:

  1. We will have to ensure that all of India is irrigated and that none of its area remains rain-fed because chemical fertilizers cannot be of much use in rain fed areas in order to boost agriculture production.
  2. We have to build small dams which cost less and yield results quickly.
  3. There should be implementation of the inter-linking of river project. This will ensure 100 per cent irrigation and we can then escape the wraths of both floods and droughts.
  4. India should treat agriculture as industry and open it to corporate world that can afford to buy these costly inputs and can employ the small and marginal farmers as their employees.
  5. Co-operative farming and co-operative marketing of agricultural products should be introduced. The farmers should be ensured by giving them proper guidance and training to run co-operative banks. Presently co-operatives are stuck up under government controls.
  6. Farmers co-operative should be formed that can produce input required for agriculture. To achieve this, necessary guidance and training should be given to farmers.
